October Newsletter

Summer may be over, but it sure doesn’t feel that way here at the Shed.  Southern California has been experiencing yet another heat wave, and coastal temperatures were inching towards triple digits for a few days there.  The water is as warm as ever, and with a killer south swell on it’s way out we’ve had to remind ourselves that it’s October! Summer was good to us, we even surpassed 5,000 ‘likes’ on Facebook!! (More to come on that soon!)

Fall is a welcomed season though, since it means that we’re battling less crowds, and looking forward to winter swells.

Speaking of winter… check out Bird’s thoughts on prepping for colder temperatures here

We had a great time with One Palm Media towards the end of September, screening their killer Cloudbreak documentary- THUNDERCLOUD to a packed house.  To our friends on the East Coast- the Thundercloud crew is continuing their USA tour through the rest of October.  Check their website for dates and details.

If you missed the last event, that’s a bummer.  But not to worry! We’ve got some more fun events lined up…

October 18th:

William Painter presents: “Bring it Back”, a live slideshow of previously unreleased photographs from the one and only Aaron Chang.  Space will be limited.

November 7th:

The 6th Annual Save the Waves Film Festival begins its 2014 US Tour with an epic evening of live music and fresh international surf films at Bird’s Surf Shed in San Diego on 11/7/14.  North county rockers Taken By Canadians will open the night’s festivities which will feature world premieres of surf, adventure and documentary films.  This event will have a cash bar with offerings from Pacifico Beer, Tito’s Vodka, & Suerte Tequila. The Save The Waves Film Festival is a fundraiser for Save The Waves Coalition and World Surfing Reserves, and all proceeds support their international coastal conservation programs.

**On a serious note- longtime Shed friend and all around legend, Brandon Lillard, was in a serious BASE jumping accident in September.  Somewhere in the fine print of his insurance paperwork, there was a clause stating parachute activity would not be covered.  The good news is that Brandon is alive, and recovering well.  Also, in the miracles department, the scans performed at the ER in Utah discovered a potentially fatal (but treatable) heart condition that would have killed Brandon had it not been diagnosed.  The bad news is that the medical bills surrounding his accident will no doubt be astronomical, and he should be focused on healing, not how he’s going to pay those bills.  Brandon would never ask for himself, so it’s up to his friends and the people who love and admire him to help him through this.  If you have a minute, please check out the Go Fund Me that has been set up to help. **

Bird’s Surf Shed Logo and Identity

Big thanks goes out to MiresBall for designing our amazing logo. THANK YOU!

Dylan Jones, a Senior Designer at MiresBall, wrote two posts about creating Bird’s Surf Sheds’ logo and identity on his personal blog, Beard is the New Black. Here is Dylans’ posts combined.

Here’s some more fun stuff I’ve been working on at MiresBall lately. These are some business cards that we designed for Bird’s Surf Shed. To keep the costs down, we made stamps to use on recycled stock (the business cards are corrugated cardboard). Each piece of the system has a stamp with the relevant info, and the overall look is raw and unfinished. We wanted to make sure the branding for Bird’s shop felt authentic and not overly commercialized like some of the other chain surf shops.

I’ve been working on this logo at MiresBall on and off for a few weeks now and we’re finally making some progress. It’s been really fun exploring ways to design an authentic surf-inspired logo that stays true to the culture, but doesn’t become cliché or over-designed. We’re getting closer.
